Writer, editor, publisher and an activist of children literature, Santanoo Tamuly has written and published thirty children books, both of fictions and non-fiction. He edits ‘Mouchaq’, a children monthly since 1984 and ‘Natun Awiscar’, a popular science monthly for children, both established in 1988. Most of his books are published by his own publication house ‘Mouchaq Prakashan’. He organized and conducted two important workshops sponsored by National Book Trust, India, consequent to which, in 2000, he developed 20 manuscripts for children in the age group of 8-11 years. This he followed by developing 25 manuscripts for children in the age group of 6-8 years in 2008. National Book Trust, India published these books, which have since translated into English and other Indian languages. CBSE has recommended two of his books for supplementary reading in class I and II. In 2005-2006 he introduced 65 children libraries in remote villages and tea gardens for encouraging reading habit among children of disadvantage communities. Since 2009 Sri Tamuly and his colleagues at ‘Heritage Assam’, an NGO under his stewardship, have been working as an implementing partner of UNICEF for language skill development and language transition among 5000 children of tea garden communities in Assam. A team of more than 100 storytellers has been trained to tell stories amidst children at 50 locations in the interior tea gardens on weekends regularly.
Sri Tamuly has been awarded the Sahitya Akademi Bal Sahitya Puraskar and the National Award for outstanding contribution towards science popularization among children.
