An editor / publisher by profession, Rubin D’Cruz has worked for many public sector / voluntary publishing firms since 1987, mainly the Kerala Sastra Sahitya Parishad, Kerala State Institute of Children’s Literature and the National Book Trust, India. He is presently the editor of the Malayalam department of National Book Trust, India (NBT).
Rubin has participated in the Bologna Children’s Book Fair in Italy, Jerusalem International Book Fair in Israel and Sharjah International Book Fair, Sharjah as an Indian delegate. He was also a speaker at a conference of writers and literary translators (WALTIC) at Stockholm, Sweden. He has been a member of the editorial board of Eureka Children’s Science Magazine and, later, a member of the publication committee of the KSSP. He has also been a member of the advisory committee of the Department of Publication, University of Kerala.
He became secretary of Jaihind Vayanasala, Puthenthope, his village library, at the age of 15, and continues to have a long association with the village library movement in Kerala. He presented a paper on the future of Kerala Village libraries at the 3rd International Congress on Kerala Studies, organised by the A K Gopalan Centre at Thiruvananthapuram, in 2010. He also worked to develop a new system for school library purchases in Kerala while at the Kerala State institute of Children’s Literature.
As Director of Kerala State Institute of Children’s Literature he edited Thaliru, a children’s magazine for the ten-plus age group. He initiated the Thiruvananthapuram Rights Table at the Thiruvananthapuram Book Fair in 2008. It continued at the 2009 and 2010 editions of the Book Fair. In 2011 he moved to Delhi and initiated a Rights Table at The New Delhi World Book Fair. Rubin is an advisor to the Publishing Next conference. He lives with his seventeen year old son, Aaromal and wife Sajitha in Kochi.
